This day sucks
Sunday, 4 September 2011 23:42For those of you not in central Texas, we're in a severe drought. No rain in months, highs of over 100F for over 80 days. It's been brutal. Today we got a cold front. Great, huh? Cool things off a bit? No: it brought wind with it, wind that combined with the high heat and humidity and lack of rain made the perfect fire conditions. Wildfires broke out all around Austin in Bastrop, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, the Steiner Ranch subdivision, Spicewood, and even one in the small town I live in. (It was small and easily contained, no longer a threat.) The fire in Bastrop is by far the worst. Three of my friends live in Bastrop and they had five minutes to grab what they could and flee. The fire was visible in the trees from the front porch of one of their houses. Most likely their homes are gone. They have most likely lost everything.
There were so many good times in Bastrop for so many years. I have such fond memories of hanging out in the quiet peace of the woods, surrounded by huge, ancient pine trees. Today they burned.
My friends are safe. Houses can be replaced. But, by the gods, this just sucks.
